fireworks for ivor
(remembering ivor gurney, 1890-1937)
(remembering ivor gurney, 1890-1937)
walking the furrows, lights in the distance.
lights above meeting and parting.
he asks: "are you any closer, now?"
here your feet sink into the mud.
here night birds call. your breath shines.
the lake blinks in and out.
what is unshaken, what will stand fast?
succession. effort. impulse.
iron in the earth and in the blood.
shadows jerking and skittering.
the quick slow quick slow minutes streaming past.
he shuts his eyes, he asks: "what do you see?"
you tilt your head back, you look around.
fire and gold, the shapes of birds.
then a slow fading.
then the blankness that is the sky.
