to drink from a muddy river is to face a trial, but if its waters are clear, it is prosperity & a happy life. jumping from one bank to the other you escape adversity, you silence doubt. i have lost something in this murky water, i have suffered harm. i climb slowly out onto the bank. i sever my association with one man & meet another. if the river runs through streets and markets & people bathe in it, its waters are the waters of justice. but if it floods people’s homes, damaging property & personal belongings, it is an invading army. a river may flow into your house & flow right out again, harming no one. but the poor person who sees a river in his home will soon be driving someone out of his household. after a loud quarrel, after some unforgivable act. to swim in the river is to work for the government, & to become it is death. i leap across the dark waters, escaping hellfire. i cross from one bank to the other, dispelling fear & worry. i shed all anger, i scatter all distress & anguish. but i miss you still. i miss you still.
